Celts set record in 116-70 win over Dallas Christian

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas set a team record for points Tuesday as they defeated Dallas Christian College 116-70.

All 16 players in uniform for the Celts scored Tuesday as UST improved to 3-0 for the season.

Nathan Ghavidel (Boerne, Texas/Champion) came off the UST bench to score a team-high 15 points while shooting 4-of-10 from the 3-point arc, leading four Celts scoring in double-figures Tuesday. Cameron Gims (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) scored 14 points, going 4-of-7 from 3-point range.

Keaton Shaw (Mont Belvieu, Texas/Barbers Hill) scored 11 points and pulled in four rebounds, while Nathan Thormaehlen (Katy, Texas/Katy) chipped in 10 points for the Celts.

D'Aaron Davis scored 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting to lead Dallas Christian (1-7).

The 116 points scored by the Celts on Tuesday were the most by a UST team in the modern era of the men's basketball program, dating back to the 2009-10 season. The Celts last topped the century mark on Dec. 5, 2018, when they defeated UDallas 108-60.

The Celts shot 54 percent (44 of 82) from the field, which included shooting 41 percent (18 of 44) from the 3-point arc. The Celts forced 29 turnovers while committing only seven, and outscored DCC 41-6 in points off turnovers.

Kennard Robinson (Houston, Texas/Sam Houston MSTC) scored nine points and handed out four assists for the Celts, while Christian Alaekwe (Fresno, Texas/Hightower), Brian Payton (Cypress, Texas/Coastal Bend College), and Joshua Sanchez (McAllen, Texas/McAllen Memorial) scored eight points apiece for UST. Alaekwe added seven rebounds, three assists, and four blocked shots to his stat line.

The Celts return to action Saturday when they visit Concordia Texas in a rematch of UST's season-opening game. St. Thomas won the first meeting 94-74. Tipoff for Saturday's rematch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
