Pirates Solidify Playoff Spot with Split

With a split on Saturday afternoon against Austin College the Southwestern softball team firmed up a spot in the SCAC Conference Championship. The Pirates won game one 6-0 and then fell 9-1 in five innings in game two.

Lauren Zearfoss was nearly untouchable in game one as she held the 'Roos to just five hits and no runs, walking none and striking out ten batters.

The Pirate offense gave her ample room to work with by scoring three runs in the third inning. SU added one run in each of the fourth, sixth and seventh innings and continued their sensational defense to win 6-0.

Karen Ramirez led at the plate for Southwestern, going 3-4 with two runs scored. Amanda Ambrose drove in two runs for the Pirates to match her two hit performance.

It was all Austin College in game two as the 'Roos were the ones to provide run support for their pitcher; scoring two runs in the first, four in the second and three in the third. SU did starting pitcher Lyndsy Maus no favors, committing five uncharacteristic errors in the 9-1 loss.

Southwestern had just two fewer hits in the game (6-8) but were unable to push one across until the fifth inning. Taylor Turpin (pictured) was tops at the plate in game two for SU with a 2-3 performance.

The Pirates move to 23-11 on the year and 9-1 in the SCAC and remain at the top of the West. They close out their series with Austin College on Sunday beginning at noon.
