Sophomore attackman
John Sutro's career day powered Colorado College to a 21-8 victory over Widener University on Saturday afternoon at Washburn Field.
Sutro scored three goals and dished out seven assists to become the first Tiger to record 10 points in a game since Jake Smith produced five goals and five assists during a 25-2 thrashing of Millsaps College on April 22, 2012.
With seven assists, Sutro also became CC's first player to post seven in a game since Carson Christman posted the same total during a 28-0 win over Oglethorpe University on April 8, 2011. Â Â
"Every time I dodged, I tried to keep my head up and if anyone was open, I was going to hit them," Sutro said. "It's the mentality I take into every game and it's what happened today.
"We weren't complacent at all. We kept the foot on the gas pedal which was awesome and hopefully next week we can expect more of this."
Junior attackman
Coby Petau also scored three goals for Colorado College, which leveled its record at 2-2.
Senior midfielder
Tyler Borko scored twice and assisted on three others, including a pair by Sutro.
Senior midfielders
Aaron Maslow and
Tom Haller, along with junior midfielder Max Reiser, scored two goals apiece for the Tigers.
The contest was scoreless until CC struck for four goals in a span of 2:01 midway through the first quarter.
Haller put the Tigers on the board 6:36 into the game, and 29 seconds after freshman face-off specialist
Jacob Rogers won the first of his 14 draws, Sutro and Borko clicked for the first time.
Petau scored twice in 25 seconds to make the score 4-0, and then Haller added a man-up goal with 51 seconds to play in the first quarter.
After
Daniel Lunghamer gave Colorado College a 6-0 cushion nearly two minutes into the second quarter, Brady Franks notched the first of his team-leading three goals to put the Pride on the scoreboard.
The Tigers added four more goals to build a 10-1 lead with 1:50 to play before halftime, the last two coming from sophomore long-pole midfielder
Billy Hutchison and senior defensive midfielder
Parker Woo just seven seconds apart.
Widener scored the last goal of the first half and the first goal of the second, but CC answered with four in a row, including the first career marker by senior defender
Chris Roussos. Â Â
In all, 13 different players found the net for Colorado College, which set a season high for goals scored.
"We just had to get back to playing our brand of ball," head coach
Sean Woods said. "We played physical, up tempo, had guys having fun on the sidelines and cheering each other on, and it reflected on the field. I felt confident in the game plan, so it was just about having fun and playing loose."
The Tigers finished the game with a 48-37 advantage in total shots and a 29-22 edge in ground balls.
Junior goaltender
Andrew Harwood had 10 saves for Colorado College.
Hutchison caused three turnovers to lead the CC defense, while Rogers picked up a team-best six ground balls.
The Tigers also received another solid performance from their man-down unit, which allowed only two goals in 11 chances.
Starting goalkeeper Matt Horton stopped three shots for the Pride before leaving the game with a leg injury with a little less than three minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Carter Landry made seven saves during nearly 38 minutes of action for Widener.
Kyle Pollick scored twice in the final two minutes for the Pride, which dropped to 0-3 on the season.
The Tigers continue their nine-game home stand on Saturday, March 9, when Rhodes College visits Washburn Field at 1 p.m. Â Â
"Rhodes made the tournament last year and they're going to be a big challenge for us, but we are starting to play well at home," Woods said.
