Aragon-Menzel Sets Colorado College to SCAC Championship Match

Box Score Isabelle Aragon-Menzel ran the Colorado College attack to near perfection as the No. 1-ranked Tigers advanced to the championship match of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 25-9, 25-11, 25-12 demolition of Austin College on Saturday afternoon at Reid Arena.

Top-seeded CC advanced to the title match for the fourth year in a row and will play host to Trinity University in a battle of the top two teams in the conference as well as the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Division III Top-25 Coaches Poll.

Aragon-Menzel dished out 29 assists while leading the Tigers to a season-high .425 team hitting percentage. Colorado College, which also received five assists from Jenny Jenks and four from Peyton Hummel, connected for 42 kills on 87 attempts with only five errors.

Georgia Mullins led the Tigers with 14 kills on an error-free 20 swings. The match marked the sixth time this season the junior middle hitter did not commit an error and the fourth time she hit .700 or above.

Isabella Vasquez finished with 12 kills and did not misfire on any of her 24 attacks. The junior outside hitter hot .500 or better for the second time this season.

Hummel served three service aces as CC matched its season high of eight. The sophomore libero also recorded a team-high 12 digs.

"Belle (Aragon-Menzel) played brilliantly running the offense and Peyton was awesome both on serve receive and defense," head coach Rick Swan said. "Georgia once again dominated the net and Bella (Vasquez) was just amazing attacking on both pins."

Colorado College set the tone for the match in the first set when the Tigers pounded down kills on its first four swings during an 8-1 run. Vasquez led CC with four kills on six swings.

"Coming into this match we wanted to make sure not to take anything for granted," Swan said. "We wanted to set the tone right from the beginning. We came out and did that and we never let up."

In the second set, the 'Roos were within 9-6 after a kill by Spencer Wynne, but Mullins ignited a 5-0 run that swung the momentum in favor of the Tigers and Austin College never recovered. Mullins displayed a wide array of shots to record six kills on seven attempts as Colorado College grabbed a two-set lead.

The Tigers built a 9-3 cushion during the early stages of the third set. After Austin trimmed its deficit to 12-8, CC used another 10-3 surge to build a 10-point lead on a kill by senior opposite hitter Laney Swan. Wynne got one point back for the 'Roos, but another kill by Swan capped a 4-0 run to close out the match and Colorado College's 14th sweep of the season.
The Tigers now have won 32 consecutive sets since coming from behind to defeat Trinity on March 6.

CC held the 'Roos to a -.034 team hitting percentage for the second time this season, which marked the fourth time overall an opponent hit in negative numbers against the Tigers.
