Ladies Fall To Southwestern 4-0 On Friday Night

The Centenary women's soccer team fell 4-0 to the Southwestern University Pirates in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at Mayo Field.

Shreveport - The Centenary women's soccer team fell 4-0 to the Southwestern University Pirates in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at Mayo Field.

The Ladies (2-9-2, 0-2-2 SCAC) fell behind 2-0 at halftime to the Pirates (11-1, 3-0 SCAC) and then allowed a pair of second-half goals as they remained winless at home this season (0-4-1). Centenary will aim to break that streak on Sunday when the Maroon and White face Texas Lutheran at 2:30 p.m. Sunday is Senior Day for the Ladies as it is the final home match of the regular season.

Centenary and Southwestern met for the second time this season after they squared off back on Sept. 26 in Georgetown, Texas in a match that did not count for conference in which the Pirates recorded a 2-0 win. Centenary, despite Friday's setback, is still an impressive 13-8-1 in its last 22 home matches.

Southwestern received a pair of goals from freshman F Samantha Hazen and senior D Hanna Sanderson added a goal and an assist. Freshman MF Yamila Lara scored the Pirates' first goal 13 minutes into the match, an unassisted score, and then Sanderson scored in the 29^th minute for a 2-0 lead. Melanie Saldana assisted Hazen's first goal in the 67^th minute and Sanderson assisted Hazen's second goal in with just under a minute remaining in the match.

Centenary senior GK Avery Sanderson (McKinney, Texas) played the entire match and made four saves. Southwestern keeper Johnna Campbell also went the distance and recorded one save. Southwestern held a 17-2 advantage in shots and took eight corner kicks to none for the Ladies. Each team committed seven fouls.

Friday marked the first time that the Ladies did not play past regulation as their previous three matches went into either overtime or double overtime. Centenary, which earned a hard-fought 0-0 double-overtime tie on Oct. 8 versus the St. Thomas Celts in a SCAC contest at Mayo Field, also tied Schreiner 1-1 on Oct. 3 in Kerrville in double OT. Centenary previously defeated St. Thomas 1-0 back on Sept. 10 in Houston in double overtime. The Ladies have played four overtime matches this season.

The Ladies will next face the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs in their annual Senior Day match on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 2:30 p.m. Seven seniors will be honored in a postgame ceremony on the field.
