Box Score Scott Palguta's first game as head coach of the Colorado College men's soccer team was a memorable one.
The Tigers tied the score with 4:36 remaining in regulation and then won the contest on
Jack McCormick's 'Golden Goal' 1:48 into overtime.
The junior defender's first career goal occurred four hours and eight minutes after the game kicked off thanks in part to a 126-minute weather delay.
"It feels great," Palguta said. "I'm really proud of the guys. There were certainly some variables that were completely outside of our control that worked against us at times today. The delay could not have come at a worse time because that was the best stretch of the game for us."
McCormick sent a blistering shot through the wall and inside the left post to give CC a season-opening overtime victory for the first time since it defeated the University of Texas at Dallas by the same score on Aug. 31, 2012. It also was his first career tally.
"I'm proud to say that we rehearsed that yesterday," Palguta said. "We spent the last 25 minutes of practice yesterday working with those guys. The execution by Jack was flawless."
Sophomore midfielder
Tim Huettel tied the game when he steeled a cross from freshman defender
Keenan Amer, stepped to the middle of the box and put a bending shot into the top left corner.
"I'm so happy for Tim," Palguta said. "He had a slow start to preseason, but he came back to life last week in the scrimmage against UCCS. That's the
Tim Huettel we want to see on a regular basis. The cross from Keenan was outstanding. He did not look like a freshman out there today."
The delay could not have come at a better time for Carthage, which was on its heels for most of the second half. The Tigers had several dangerous scoring opportunities moments before the warning horn sounded, including a shot by senior midfielder
Seth Newby that was blocked by a Red Men defender from in front of the right post.
A little less than three minutes after the teams returned to the field, the Red Men took their second lead of the game. Sophomore forward Johnny Rimkus chased down a long pass and chipped the ball over Colorado College sophomore goalkeeper
Theo Hooker with 24 minutes remaining in regulation.
Hooker came off his line to challenge Kevin Maloney's shot from 15 yards out and then smothered the ball at the right post with two minutes to play in the second half. He finished with three saves.
Junior midfielder
Soren Frykholm gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead just 2:55 into the contest, but senior midfielder Shane Reilly leveled the score just 23 seconds later.
CC launched 11 of its 15 shots after halftime and finished the game with a 15-9 advantage. The Tigers also recorded a 9-2 margin in corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Evan Bott made stopped three shots for Carthage.
"Carthage is a good team," Palguta said. "They play a really challenging schedule, they know how to grind, they're well coached and disciplined. I think they're going to have a very good season.
"For the guys to find a way to come back from down a goal, I can't say I've seen that type of resiliency from a group in a game since I've been here at CC. Hopefully that will give us some momentum as we move forward into what will be a really tough weekend. "
Colorado College travels to Southern California this week for games at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and the University of Redlands on Friday afternoon and Saturday night, respectively.
