Hot-Shooting Tigers Drop Centenary

Box Score Colorado College connected on five consecutive three-point attempts early in the first half and never looked back as it opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 93-76 victory over Centenary College on Saturday afternoon at Reid Arena.

CC hit 10 of its 19 long-range shots, outscoring the Gents 30-21 from behind the arc. The Tigers sealed the victory by making 13 of 14 free throws during the final five minutes when Centenary tried to extend the game with fouls.

Justin Berardino, John Hatch, Eric Houska and Bobby Roth all connected for a pair of three pointers, while Tyler Jonas and Reed Nakikihara added one apiece.

Berardino, who also converted on 10 of 12 free-throws, led the Tigers with a season-best 16 points. The senior guard also recorded seven rebounds and three assists.

Senior forward James Lonergan scored 12 points, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and dished out six assists.

Sophomore forward Andrew Maddock added 13 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Eric Houska added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Colorado College was leading 11-5 when Berardino and Houska alternated on four long-range shots to give the Tigers a 23-7 lead just 5:32 into the contest.

After the Gents pulled to within 12 points on a jumper by senior forward Donovan Williams, senior forward Tyler Jonas dialed long distance to give CC a 15-point cushion with 12:07 to play.

Colorado College led 30-11 when Maddock scored on a layup just past the midway point, but Centenary trimmed six points off its deficit and was within 41-28 after sophomore guard Travion Kirkendoll connected from behind the arc with 2:15 to go before the half.

A Maddock free throw gave CC its biggest lead of the game three minutes into the second half at 50-28. The Gents scored 10 in a row to pull to within 12 points, but the Tigers answered with a 9-2 run to build a 59-40 lead on Roth's second three-pointer. Roth came off the bench to tie his career high of 10 points.

The 10 three-point baskets marked the second time this season the Tigers finished in double figures. They made 12 during the 81-58 victory at Johnson & Wales University on Dec. 8.

Trailing by 20 with just over four minutes to play, junior guard James Sapp scored nine of his game-high 21 points to ignite a 15-5 run that saw the Gents close to within 10 points with 1:28 remaining.

After struggling from the line earlier in the second half, the Colorado College made 11 of 12 free throws during the final 1:28 to close out the game.

Junior guard Brandon Campbell made five of 10 three-point attempts and finished with 17 points.

Junior forward Kendall Demouchet and Kirkendoll added 11 points apiece for the Gents, who slipped to 7-4 overall.

CC (5-6) and Centenary complete their two-game series on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. MT.
