Southwestern runs away from Austin College to capture SCAC opener, 37-7

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern posted 603 yards of total offense, including 320 on the ground, en route to a 37-7 victory over Austin College in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at Birkelbach Field.

The Pirates (2-3, 1-0 SCAC) scored in all four quarters to earn its first-ever SCAC win.

Frederick Hover ran for 113 yards and a touchdown, and he threw for 62 yards on 5 of 7 attempts. Bryan Hicks added 221 passing yards and 36 more on the ground.

In addition to Hover, four other Southwestern players found the end zone.

Jahmaal Dumes posted an 18-yard score to end the first quarter and give the Bucs a 10-0 lead. John David Bishop scored on a five-yard run in the second period.

Hover's lone trip to the end zone was a five-yard rush in the third quarter, extending Southwestern's lead to 23-7.

Alyas Ramirez and Chris Demny both registered their first collegiate touchdowns in the final quarter on four- and one-yard runs, respectively.

SU got on the board on its second drive of the game, as Luke Fierst booted a 46-yard field goal.

The Pirates limited the 'Roos (2-3, 0-1) to 191 yards of total offense. Austin College managed its only points in the second quarter, when Cooper Woodyard connected with Tom Clancy for a 36-yard score.

Justin Broussard logged seven tackles, including two for loss, and a sack to pace Southwestern's defensive effort. Nik Kelly added three stops, including one behind the line of scrimmage, and an interception.

The Pirates travel to San Antonio next Saturday to face Trinity in a league contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
