Pirates Open Conference Action at Home Against Austin College

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern pitching staff got limited run support early as the Pirates opened conference action with a win and a loss on Saturday afternoon. SU fell 4-0 in game one before turning things around in game two to win 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh.

After two and a half innings with no base runners Southwestern led off the bottom of the third with back to back walks and Abi O'Connor advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position with one out. The 'Roos managed to escape unscathed by getting the next two batters to ground out and line out to end the inning.

Lyndsy Maus continued to be strong on the mound, keeping batters off balance with perfectly executed change-ups to set Austin College down in order through five.

Galloway and Freshour drew back-to-back walks again in the bottom of the fifth with one out and O'Connor advanced them to third on a sacrifice but to give SU another chance to score. Once again, the 'Roos got the out they needed to keep the game scoreless heading into the sixth.

Austin College got their first runner on base with two outs in the sixth on a Pirate error and scored after a pair of base hits. AC followed with a three-run homerun by Baker that snuck over the left field fence to lead by four, 4-0, after five and a half innings.

Southwestern responded at the plate, opening with a pair of singles by Amanda Ambrose and Kaitlyn Pavlicek. A walk to Jessica Bryant with one out loaded the bases for Ashleigh Scott (pictured). Scott grounded to third, allowing AC to throw Ambrose out at home on the force out and Tessa Galloway's liner was snagged by a diving Chelsea Delaney at short to keep the Pirates from pushing a run across the plate.

SU was held scoreless in the seventh also as Austin College took the game one win, 4-0.

The 'Roos picked up where they left off to start game two, loading the bases with one out and scoring on a wild pitch by Pavlicek and scored one more just before Southwestern completed the double play to end the inning to lead 2-0 after the top of the first.

Tessa Galloway evened the count on one swing in the bottom of the second with a lofting homerun to left field, driving in Scott to put the score at 2-2 after two innings of play.

With one out in the top of the fifth Austin College threatened again, putting runners on second and third with one out. Back to back singles by Trudell and Dowsey made it a reality as the 'Roos drove in two more to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

Southwestern responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning on a single by Karen Ramirez that drove in Ambrose from second base to pull the Pirates within one, 4-3.

After locking down defensively SU got back down to work at the plate. Scott led off with a single and after two Austin College errors the Pirates had pushed the tying run across the plate. With one inning to play the game was deadlocked at 4-4.

Maus confidently stepped to the mound and had settled into the game after entering in relief in the fifth. A Pirate error allowed the first base runner on and Trudell followed with a single up the middle. The duo advanced a base on a wild pitch to move into scoring position. The 'Roos put the ball in play and forced the Pirates into tough plays to score three in the inning and take a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Pavlicek started things off with a double off the left field fence and Haley Hughes drove her home with a single down the left field line.
