CC Clinches Share of SCAC Regular-Season Crown

Box Score

Griffin Meyer struck for the game-winning goal in the 78th minute as the Colorado College men's soccer team clinched at least a share of its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season crown with a 2-1 victory over Trinity University on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.

Meyer collected a long pass from Kiran Singh in the center of the field, took a couple of touches, and curled a right-footed shot inside the left post for his team-best 10th goal of the season.

The first-year forward became the first Tiger to record double-digit goals since Brandon Ogilvie scored 11 in 2014, and the first freshman to accomplish the feat since Matt Fechter struck for 11 in 2009.

Meyer also leads the team with four game-winning goals, the most by a Tiger since Caden MacKenzie scored five in 2016.

After a scoreless first half, Trinity broke through in the 50th minute when Andrea Codispoti worked his way around a CC defender in left corner, carried the ball parallel to the end line and sent a cross to Fraser Burns, who scored on a first touch inside the near post while being marked.

The Tigers leveled the score in the 63rd minute when John Schuler scored on a penalty kick, placing a low right-footed shot under TU goalkeeper Blake Lieberman's arm at the right post. The penalty was given for a handball in the 18-yard box.

It was the first penalty shot of Schuler's collegiate career.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keleher Felton made four saves for Colorado College, including a pair during the final 15 minutes of the first half.

In the 31st minute, he leaped to grab Quentin Van Der Lee's direct kick from 22 yards out in the center of the field just below the crossbar. In the 39th minute, he made a two-handed save on Kyle Davis' shot from the right sideline that was curling in at the far post.

CC improved to 12-5-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the SCAC. Trinity is 9-4-2 overall and tied for second place in the conference with Texas Lutheran University with a 5-2-0 mark.

Palguta's Perspective
"I'm thrilled with the grit and determination we saw from the team in the second half," head coach Scott Palguta said. "The guys kept a cool head and a determined mindset, and quickly clawed their way back when we went down 1-0. We didn't play nearly our best today, but the desire was there from the entire group.
"Griffin's goal, of course, was exquisite. He's proven to be a real game-changer in attack for our team.  His preparation and work ethic is outstanding for a young player, so I'm especially pleased for him."

Colorado College Standouts
John Schuler led the Tigers with three shots, two of which were on target.
CC finished with a 16-12 advantage in total shots a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.

Trinity Standouts
Blake Lieberman finished with four saves.
Fraser Burns put both of his shots on frame.

Next for the Tigers
Colorado College plays host to Johnson & Wales University on Friday, Nov. 1, in the regular-season finale at Stewart Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
