Box Score Senior forward
Stuart Beezley scored once and set up an insurance goal late in the second half to power Colorado College to a 2-0 victory over Schreiner University on Friday afternoon at Stewart Field.
After coming close on numerous opportunities in the opening minutes of the game, Beezley gave the Tigers a lead they would not surrender in the 28th minute when he knocked in a cross from sophomore midfielder
Caden MacKenzie.
Despite playing into a strong southern breeze during the opening 45 minutes, CC dominated possession and outshot the Mountaineers, 16-0.
Freshman midfielder
Brian Rubin doubled Colorado College's advantage in the 70th minute when he scored his first collegiate goal on a header from the middle of the penalty area off a cross from Beezley.
Sophomore goalkeeper Blake Lawson kept SU within striking distance by making 11 saves. He stopped seven shots in the second half alone, including one on
Max Grossenbacher's penalty kick with 2:40 to play.
By then, however, it was too little, too late, thanks to the Tigers' suffocating defense.
CC tied its season high by launching 33 total shots and held an opponent to one shot or less for the fifth time.
Freshman
Theo Hooker was forced to make just one save while recording his seventh shutout of the year. The first-year keeper improved to 9-2-2 and lowered his goals-against average to 0.45.
The Tigers, who improved to 12-3-2 overall and 8-2-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, strengthened their grip on second place in the league standings with two games to play.
Colorado College plays its final home of the season on Sunday at noon against Texas Lutheran University.
