Seniors lead CC to tournament sweep

The No. 13 Colorado College volleyball team had three seniors named to the 2011 Molten Volleyball Spike It Up Classic All-Tournament team as the Tigers won both of its games to earn the tournament title on Saturday in Reid Gymnasium.

Senior Amy Schornack was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, while seniors Meredith Ballard and Haley Hamilton were each named to the all-tournament team.

The Tigers hosted “Dig Pink” in the first game of the day. CC wore pink uniforms in support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Tigers teamed up with the Side-Out Foundation in order to raise funds towards the fight against cancer.

The Tigers won their first game of the day in a hard fought win over UC Santa Cruz, 3-1.

CC dropped the first set against UCSC, 25-16 when it hit a .000 attack percentage with eight errors.

The Tigers rallied back in the second set to beat the Slugs in extra points, 36-34. This was the first time in program history that CC has scored 36 points in a single set.

The Tigers carried that momentum into the remaining sets, beating the Slugs, 25-18 and 25-13.

Senior Sarah Schmoker led the attack for CC with a season-high 17 kills. Schmoker also had 11 digs on defense to earn her fourth double-double of the season.

Schornack ran the offense for the Tigers with a team-high 40 assists and served up a team-high three aces. Also aiding the offense was Ballard and Hamilton who had 11 and nine kills, respectively.

Junior Laura Goldsmith led the defense with a team-high 22 digs, while senior Hannah Varnell added 11 digs. Freshman Randi Braak and Hamilton both led CC at the net with four blocks each.

Colorado College won the final game of the tournament in a 3-0 sweep over Webster University. The Tigers beat the Gorloks, 27-25, 25-17, 25-22.

Goldsmith led CC on defense with a team-high 20 digs and added 11 kills for her first double-double of the weekend.

Schornack dished out a team-high 45 assists to run the offense. Ballard led the attack with 12 kills. Freshman Kristen Liberty and Hamilton each added another nine kills each to support the offense.

Varnell had 13 digs, while Liberty added 10 digs on defense for the Tigers. Goldsmith and Braak each contributed to a team-high two blocks each at the net.

With the wins, CC has extended its winning streak to 10 games and now has a 24-5 record this season. UC Santa Cruz dropped to 12-8, while Webster fell to 13-9 this season.

The Tigers will host Ursuline College for a mid-week match on Tuesday, Oct. 18 before traveling to Conway, Ark. for the SCAC Central Intra-Pod tournament on Oct. 22-23.
