CC Can’t Keep Pace with Grinnell

Normally when a team scores 107 points in a basketball game, it expects to come out on top. However, there is nothing resembling normal when the opponent in Grinnell College.

The Pioneers connected on 24 of 68 shots from behind the arc and pulled away in the second half for a 140-107 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Colorado College led 44-43 when freshman guard David-Elijah Brown sank a pair of free throws with 6:06 remaining in the first half, but Grinnell utilized a 21-11 surge to build a nine-point lead after 20 minutes.

The Tigers were within nine at 75-66 when freshman forward Devin Martinez scored two of his season-high 20 points, but that proved to be as close as CC would get.

Martinez was 10-for-13 from the floor and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds.

A 26-6 run gave the Pioneers a 29-point cushion before Colorado College scored eight of the next 10 points and cut its deficit to 21 on a layup by freshman guard Aaron Acosta midway through the second half.

Junior forward CooXooEii Black also finished with 20 points for the Tigers, making eight of his 12 field-goal attempts.

Acosta added 15 points, while junior guard Eric Jonas and junior forward Nabeel Elabdeia finished with 13 and 11, respectively.

Scott Cunningham grabbed a game-high and personal-best 10 rebounds. CC's freshman guard also dished out a season-high nine assists and scored seven points.

While Grinnell was scoring 72 points from behind the arc, the Tigers did not attempt a three-pointer until the second half and finished the game just 2-for-3 from long distance.

Vinny Curta poured in a game-high 33 points for the Pioneers, who improved to 8-2.

Zack Stice knocked down six of his seven attempts from three-point range and finished with 20 points. 

Colorado College (4-6) returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend when the Tigers visit Texas Lutheran University and Southwestern University on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
