Tigers fall to UCCS, 3-0

The No. 14 Colorado College volleyball team fell to its cross-town rivals the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, 3-0 Wednesday evening in the Mountain Lions' Gallogly Events Center.

Colorado College struggled at the net against Division II UCCS, hitting a season-low .042 hitting percentage and tying a season-low six blocks.

The Tigers got an early 2-0 lead in the first set with two attack errors by the Mountain Lions.

UCCS took a 7-4 lead, but CC rallied back with three straight points to tie the set at 7-7. The rally began with a service error by the Mountain Lions, followed by kills from junior Laura Goldsmith and sophomore Devin Wilkinson.  

UCCS then went on a 6-2 run to take the lead and win the set, 25-17.

In the second set, the Mountain Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Tigers went on a 4-2 run to tie the set at 4-4. The run was sparked by a Wilkinson kill, followed by a UCCS attacking error and an ace by senior Amy Schornack.

The Mountain Lions went on another 6-2 run to re-capture the lead and win the second set, 25-13.

In the final set, Colorado College got an early 3-0 lead with a kill by freshman Kristen Liberty, an attacking error by UCCS and a kill by Wilkinson.

The Mountain Lions then went on a 6-0 run to take the lead, and went on to win the final set, 25-14.

Liberty led the Tigers on offense with six kills and added six digs on defense. Wilkinson and Goldsmith both added five kills each on offense for CC.

Schornack ran the offense with a team-high 20 assists, while senior Hannah Varnell led the CC defense with a team-high 14 digs.

UCCS was led by Nikki Kinzer with 11 kills on offense, while Cindy Bathelt dished out a team-high 33 assists. Skylar Lewandowski led the Mountain Lion defense with 10 digs.

Colorado College dropped to 9-4 on the season, while UCCS improved to 8-4 this season.

The Tigers begin conference action this weekend in Sewanee, Tenn. on Sept. 24-25. CC opens with Oglethorpe University at 12 p.m. on Saturday and finishes the day with host Sewanee: the University of the South at 6p.m. The Tigers finish the weekend against Centre College at 11 a.m. and Birmingham-Southern College at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
