PIRATES SNAG FIRST WIN 76-68 OVER LAGRANGE

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern women’s basketball team took advantage of playing at home for the first time this season to snag their first win, 76-68 over LaGrange in the opening round of the Southwestern/Austin College Classic. Four Pirates scored in double-digits in the victory.

There were five ties in a quick first half with Southwestern holding the largest lead of the period half way through, going up by six 21-15 on a three pointer by junior Shae Seagraves. The Panthers quickly tied it back up and took a brief three point lead with just over five minutes remaining in the half on a three by Miller.

The Pirates started their run towards halftime, rattling off six straight points and headed into halftime up by five 30-25.

With the second half under way Southwestern was able to hold on to their lead until a series of fast break points allowed LaGrange to tie it up once again 43-43 with eleven remaining in the half.

SU pulled ahead once again on a pair of free throws by Narisa Trammell (pictured), but a fresh group off of LaGrange’s bench brought the game even for the seventh time 53-53 with seven minutes left.

First-year Katelyn Bartell teamed up with Seagraves to push the Pirates ahead for good as the duo made five buckets over the next three minutes, putting Southwestern up by eight with four minutes remaining.

Senior Jessica Herbst nailed a three-pointer and Trammell’s free throws down the stretch sealed the deal for Southwestern, giving them the 76-68 victory.

Seagraves led the way with 25 points on 10-22 shooting. Trammell scored 13 points going 9-10 from the free throw line. Junior Staley Mullins recorded another double-double, scoring 10 points while pulling down a game high 12 rebounds, also recording seven blocks. Herbst also chipped in 10 points in the win.

The Pirates improve to 1-2 on the season and remain at home for the final day of action at the SU/AC Classic. Southwestern will face Otterbein who defeated Austin College in the earlier game, 64-51, at 5:00 pm.
