Amer’s Goal Lifts CC Over Centenary

Box Score Sophomore defender Kennan Amer struck for his first career goal in the 74th minute to lift the Colorado College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Centenary College on Friday night.

The 20th-ranked Tigers improved to 13-2-1 overall and 11-2-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Earlier in the day, CC locked up the second seed for the 2016 SCAC Men's Soccer Championship, which will be played Nov. 4-6 at Austin College in Sherman, Texas.

With time winding down, senior defender Christian Wulff chipped the ball over the Centenary center back. Amer settled it, took a touch and slotted a shot into the bottom right corner from eight yards out on the left side.

"I am so pleased for Keenan's first collegiate goal," head coach Scott Palguta said. "He has been rock steady the past two seasons and has certainly earned a moment in the spotlight."

The Tigers broke through in the 34th minute after freshman midfielder Hayden Cogswell was fouled in the box by the Gents' Nick Hammond. Senior defender Jack McCormick put Colorado College on the board when he converted on the first penalty kick of his career.

Unfortunately, the lead lasted a little more than four minutes.

Centenary's Chase Clark leveled the score when he headed in Nic Douthit's direct kick from 20 yards.

Despite a 22-4 advantage in total shots, CC had a tough time creating quality scoring chances against the Gents' defense.

"Centenary's record is very deceiving," Palguta said. "Playing in Shreveport is a tough task and our guys stood tall tonight. Centenary played with incredible energy and pride, and made us earn every opportunity. I am very proud of the way our guys competed for 90 minutes."

Rylan Whan stopped 10 shots for the Gents, who slipped to 4-12-0 overall and 1-11-0 in the conference.

Colorado College plays at Austin College on Sunday at noon CT.
