Tigers sweep Rhodes, advance to SCAC semifinals

No. 13 Colorado College swept Rhodes College, 3-0 in the second round of the 2011 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship in Jackson, Miss., Friday evening. The Tigers advance to the semifinal round and will play host Millsaps College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT.
 
Colorado College beat Rhodes, 25-17 in the first set, hitting a game-high .522 attack percentage. Freshman Kristen Liberty and Junior Laura Goldsmith led the Tiger offense in the first set with four kills each.
 
CC carried its momentum into the second set with a 25-16 victory over Rhodes. Goldsmith led the attack with five kills, while Liberty added another four kills for the offense.
 
The Tigers finished the game with a 25-17 win over the Lynx in the third and final set. CC was strong defensively, holding Rhodes to a -.038 hitting percentage in the final set.
 
Goldsmith led the Tiger offense with 11 kills, while Liberty added another 10. Senior Amy Schornack ran the offense with a team-high 26 assists. Liberty also served up a team-high four aces, while Schornack added three serves aces for CC.
 
Senior Hannah Varnell led the Tiger defense with 15 digs. Goldsmith and Liberty had 11 and 10 digs, respectively to account for a double-double for each.
 
Colorado College improved to 29-6 with its third victory against Rhodes this season. Rhodes fell to 15-21 this season.

CC, which had a bye in the opening round, will square off against tournament host Millsaps College. Millsaps advanced by defeating Austin College 25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 26-24.
