ONE GOAL DEFEATS SU AT HOME

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The DePauw Tigers needed just one goal to steal a victory from the Southwestern University women’s soccer team on Friday afternoon. The loss drops the Pirates to 7-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the SCAC while the Tigers improve to 5-5-4 overall and 3-1-2 in the conference.

The first half saw the Pirates start out in typical fashion, attacking early and maintaining constant pressure. Junior Amy Douglas had a couple of good opportunities after feeds from teammates, but was double-teamed and unable to maneuver past the defenders to get a solid shot on goal.

SU took two more shots (4-2) and two more corners (2-0) than the Tigers but the first-half would come to an end 0-0.

DePauw came out on the attack in the second half, taking the first four shots of the half including the lone goal of the match in the 52nd minute. The Tigers' Julia Drummond chipped one past senior keeper Cheryl Duncan from 25 yards out and snuck it inside the left post to give DePauw the 1-0 lead.

Southwestern was able to get the ball in front of DePauw’s goal numerous times in the second half with their best look coming from senior A.J. Andreola who drilled one from 20 yards out that careened off the post, ending the SU threat.

The Pirates had nine shots to DePauw’s 12 and had three more corners (4-1) than the Tigers. Duncan recorded four saves on the afternoon while DePauw’s Caroline Kerr had six saves in the shutout.

Southwestern rebounds with another home conference match on Sunday against third place Centre College. Game time is slated for 12:30 following the men’s match.
