Dallas Holds Off the Mountaineers of Schreiner University to Grab Fourth Straight SCAC Win
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's basketball team held off Schreiner University 72-68 on Saturday afternoon. Dallas (8-5, 4-2 SCAC) were paced by Michael Wambsganss (Denver, Colo.) who finished with 21 points, finishing 9-9 at the free throw line. Schreiner (3-10, 1-5 SCAC) fell despite shooting 25-61 (41.0%) from the field. But SU shot poorly from three-point range (6-25) and was unable to knock down free throws in the late stretches of the game as they missed seven all together on the afternoon. SU slowly cut into the Dallas lead down the stretch and eventually made it a two point game with 12 seconds remaining after Chase Pinter drilled the three-pointer. Jai Love (St. Louis, Mo) stayed calm under pressure after getting fouled and nailed both free throws to put Dallas up 72-68. SU missed the ensuing three-pointer and UD was able to survive the tenacious Mountaineers in the Maher Center and secure another Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) victory.
The Mountaineers grabbed an early lead (4-2) but UD came back and later found its first lead (5-4) after Isaiah Hayes (Arlington, Texas) hit the running jumper. Dustin Mathis (Fort Worth, Texas) converted a lay-in attempt to push the Dallas lead. Alex Dehoyos pulled SU even at seven with his three-pointer. The Crusaders then exploded offensively notching a 10-0 run capped off by a big trey from Cameran Hyde (Missouri City, Texas) to put UD up 17-7 at the 13:20 mark. SU inched closer with a smaller run, but Dallas retained a double-digit lead making key buckets. In the final three minutes and change the Mountaineers grabbed an 8-4 run to finish the first half and cut the lead to seven at the halftime break (37-30).
Dallas took the first four points of the second half, but SU came back with five of their own (41-35). With nine minutes left to play, SU made it a six point game (49-43) after Pinter made his layup. Dallas tried to pull away, but SU kept fighting away and would not let the game slip away. Every Dallas jumper seemed to be countered with a three-pointer by Schreiner at the right time. Pinter and Dehoyos kept the offensive attack on for SU and made it a four-point game with a minute to play. Love made a free throw with 57 seconds left, but Pinter then countered with a three-pointer on the other end (70-68) with 12 seconds left. Love stayed true at the line to give Dallas some breathing room in the final seconds. SU had one more chance, but missed the trey to allow UD to hold on and secure the conference victory.
Following behind Wambsganss great effort was Love who grabbed 13 points in the game, notched four assists, and went 8-10 at the charity stripe. Mathis also had a big night with 10 points and five assists. Hyde also contributed nine points while drilling two three-pointers. UD shot 21-54 (38.9%) from the field and 23-29 (79.3%) from the free throw line, along with seven made treys. The Crusaders' bench totaled 30 points compared to 24 by the opposition.
Matthew Rindahl led the Mountaineers with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and a 9-10 effort at the charity stripe. Dehoyos and Pinter kept SU in the game with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Three different SU players had three assists in the contest. The Mountaineers won the rebounding battle, 41-32, that led to 11 more second chance points (18-7). SU also had 10 more points (38-28) in the paint.

Dallas will face two SCAC opponents this upcoming weekend on the road. UD will play at Texas Lutheran University on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Saturday's competition will take place at Southwestern University at 4:00 p.m.
