GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates played an outstanding complete game on Saturday night to defeat West leading Trinity 6-4 on Black Out day at Southwestern.
Southwestern starter Matt Stuart gave up three runs on three hits in the first inning of today's game between the Pirates and the Trinity Tigers at Rockwell Field. The next hit he gave up was with one out in the ninth.
In between the junior right-hander he threw 7 and 1/3 spectacular no-hit innings allowing only one run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Stuart clearly got stronger as the game went along and ended the game with an eye-popping stat line, 9 innings, only 4 hits, 3 walks, 6 strikeouts and over 145 pitches thrown.
The wind was howling throughout the game making making life difficult for batters and outfielders alike. After Trinity took the lead in the first the Bucs responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Shortstop Charlie Garrett reached on an error and eventually scored on centerfielder Cray Betts' single through the left side. DH Kyle Belski reached on a walk and came around on Patrick Keenan's RBI single.
The Pirates took the lead to earn Stuart the win with a two-run eighth inning rally keyed by a Trinity passed ball that scored catcher Johnny Gavrel and an RBI single by freshman Zac Cleveland. The Tigers tried to mount a rally in the ninth with a one out double by Nicholas Iacovella but Stuart retired the next two batters in order including a strikeout of Kevin Francke.
Stuart's performance is even more impressive given that the Tigers boasted a .364 team batting average coming into the game and had five players in their starting lineup batting over .400.
Offensively Southwestern was led by Patrick Keenan who had three hits and two RBI and Johnny Gavrel who had two hits and two runs scored.
These same teams will play again tomorrow afternoon at Rockwell Field starting at 2:00 PM.
