Statement Win! CMS Men's Soccer Rolls Past No. 9 Trinity 3-1 to open Texas Road Trip

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The CMS Men's soccer team used two goals from Ethan Tyng to defeat No. 9 Trinity (Tex.) 3-1. The Stags open a two-game Texas road-trip with a statement win over a ranked opponent on Friday in Richardson, Texas. 

The Stags improve to 2-1 after upsetting the preseason nationally ranked No. 9 Trinity Tigers squad that sees their record fall to 1-1-1 on the season. CMS has won two in a row after dropping their first game of the season against Oglethorpe and open the road trip to Richardson, Texas with a two-goal win over a nationally ranked opponent.

CMS opened the scoring just shy of 12 minutes into the first half when Daniel Rohde missed a shot and Tyng pounced on the rebound to put it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. The tally put the Stags up 1-0, who finished with three shots in total and one shot on goal in the first half. Trinity managed just one shot on net in the first half despite having a 5-1 edge in corner kicks it remained a 1-0 game at the halftime break. 

In the second half, CMS came out firing on all cylinders applying early pressure and getting a goal just 1:11 into the frame. The goal came off of a rebound from a shot by William Birchard and Rohde found the ball then found the back of the net for his first goal of the season to stretch the advantage to 2-0 at 46:11 of the second stanza. 

At the 49:02 mark of the second half, CMS extended its lead to 3-0 with the second goal of the game by Tyng as he popped the twine another time and received the assist from William Barton to put the Stags in front for good. Trinity tallied a late goal by Duncan James at 82:45 of the closing half to cut the Stags' lead to the final score, 3-1. 

The Stags outshot the Tigers 8-2 on goal and overall took 15 shots compared to six for Trinity. The Tigers held the advantage in corner kicks as they took eight compared to just three for the Stags. It was a tale of two halves for the Stags offensively as 12 of their shots came in the second frame. The offense took 46 minutes to get roaring as two goals were pushed into the net in the second stanza to extend the lead to an insurmountable three goals. 

CMS continues its Texas two-step against Texas-Dallas on Saturday, Sep. 7 at 5:30 p.m. PDT as the Stags look to go undefeated in the lone-star state. The Stags return home for their home opener on Fri., Sep. 13 against St. Thomas (Minn.) with scheduled start time set for 7 p.m.
