Austin College trips up Southwestern in series opener on Friday night, 8-1

SHERMAN, Texas – The Southwestern University baseball team dropped the series opener against Austin College, 8-1, on Friday night.

The Pirates (7-19, 3-4 SCAC) were limited to three hits in the contest.

Will Cates was 2-for-4 and scored the lone run in the first inning.

Meanwhile, the Kangaroos (10-15, 1-9 SCAC) tallied 13 hits en route to picking up their first win in league play.

Austin College scored four runs in the second to take the lead for good.

The 'Roos then added two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and one more in the eighth to pull away from the Pirates.

Jacob Kendra (1-3) was saddled with the loss, as the right-hander yielded six runs on eight hits over five innings of work.

Josh Lewis (4-4) allowed only two hits and an unearned run in seven panels to collect the victory.

The two teams will close out the series Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
