Dallas Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep, Trinity Takes Series

April 21, 2024

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team were swept in their conference doubleheader against 12th-ranked Trinity University on Sunday afternoon.  The Crusaders dropped to 20-13 overall on the year and 8-9 in conference play.

Game 1

Dallas 0, Trinity 10 (7 Innings)

WP: Jackson Teer (6-1)

LP: Dylan Krause (6-2)

Both teams were scoreless after the first frame, but Trinity jumped out to an early lead with a prolific second inning.  The Tigers wracked up six runs on five hits, tagging Krause with the single worst inning of his career thus far.

Krause was virtually untouchable otherwise; in his four innings of work outside the second inning, he held the Tigers scoreless while allowing just four baserunners on a single hit.

The Crusaders appeared to have pulled a run back with a two-out base knock by Fernando Davila, but the Tigers appealed on the play and Reed Morales was called out for having not touched home plate to end the inning.

Dallas never got a runner past second base after that, grounding out into inning-ending double plays in the fifth and seventh innings.

Trinity scored two runs on two errors on the same play to make it an 8-0 game in the sixth, then walked off the game with two runs on two hits in the seventh.

Game 2

Dallas 0, Trinity 10 (8 Innings)

WP: Trajan Lee (3-1)

LP: Marcelo Carrillo II (3-2)

Marcelo Carrillo II got in and out of a nasty jam in the first inning.  He issued four walks, but a double play and a pop up kept the inning scoreless.

The Crusaders threatened to start a two-out rally with a single and a hit batter, but the inning ended when David Saldana was picked off at second base.  After that, the Crusaders only managed one two base runners across the next five innings and only reached second base once.

Carillo II walked the bases loaded to start the third, and the Tigers quickly took advantage with an RBI single off Collin Johnson, who came in to try and limit the damage.  He very nearly escaped the inning with just the one run allowed after retiring the next two batters, but a single through the left side and a rare miscue by Paxton Huff in center made it a five run inning for the Tigers.

Johnson went on to throw three and two-thirds innings of shutout ball after that, retiring 10 batters in a row in the process.  He made way for Dominic Gill after Cristian Holloway hit a two-RBI double with two outs to make it a 7-0 game.  The next batter tripled home another run for Gill retired the next batter to end the inning.

The Crusaders got a pair of base runners with back-to-back singles by Reed Morales and Paxton Huff in the eighth, but they ran themselves out of the inning.  Morales was thrown trying to take third base on the single by Huff, then Huff was thrown out trying to steal third to end the inning.

The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth and walked off the game on a hit batter and a single to left, scoring two runs before an out was recorded.

Up Next

The Crusaders will play their final road game of the season next, a non-conference tune up against Hardin-Simmons University.  The game is scheduled for a 4:00 pm first pitch on Tuesday, April 23.
