Box Score Isabella Vasquez put down a season-high 14 kills as the No. 1-ranked Colorado College volleyball team turned back a stiff challenge from Centenary College while posting a 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 victory in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match on Friday.
Vasquez, who hit .387 on 31 swings, recorded double-digit kills for the sixth time this season. The junior outside hitter also completed her fourth double-double of the season with 12 digs.
Isabella Lipacis added 11 kills, seven digs and four blocked shots, while
Georgia Mullins finished with 11 kills, five digs and three total blocks.
"Centenary played a heck of match," head coach
Rick Swan said. "They are really scrappy defensively and our blockers had a tough time shutting down their hitters. But we fought hard and we are excited to come away with the win, clinch the top seed for the SCAC Championship and know we will be able to play each round of the tournament at home."
Neither team led by more than two points during the first set until the Tigers snapped a 21-21 tie with a 4-1 surge, the last two points coming on kills by Mullins. Vasquez put down seven kills on 13 swings to help CC take the opening set.
In the second set, Colorado College broke a 13-13 tie with four consecutive points and withstood a late rally by the Ladies and took a two-set lead on a kill by
Laney Swan. The senior opposite hitter came off the bench to .625 with five kills on eight swings.
The Tigers raced to a 7-1 lead in the third set, only to see Centenary trim its deficit to 11-9 on a CC hitting error. A 6-2 surge put Colorado College ahead 18-11, but the Ladies answered with a 4-1 run to pull to within 19-15.
Kills by Lipacis, Mullins and Meaghan Homan gave the Tigers a 22-15 lead and put an end to Centenary's comeback attempt and CC fittingly closed out the match with a pair of kills from Vasquez.
"We looked a bit rusty at times, but playing in the big dome can be deceiving," Swan said. "I thought our kids made some good adjustments late in Set 1 which they were able to carry into sets 2 and 3.
"I'm looking forward to ending our regular season with a strong effort tomorrow. This team has been a blast to coach and be around all year. I am so proud of the what they have done this entire season."
The Ladies, who are part of a four-way battle for the three remaining spots in the upcoming Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament, were led by Alyssa Davis who recorded nine kills and nine digs.
The Tigers, who now have won 23 consecutive sets this season, improved to 17-0 against Centenary and have dropped only one set to the Ladies.
