Men's Lacrosse Wins in the Snow

Men's Lacrosse Wins in the Snow

The Southwestern Pirates' were met with hostile weather when they arrived in Arlington, VA. to face the Marymount Saints. At the start of the game it was 30 mile per hour winds, flurries of snow, and a lacrosse field that was blanket white instead of green. The teams even played with lime green colored balls, because the normal white balls would have been impossible to see. Needless to say, it looked like the dead of winter instead of the start of spring. But instead of being daunted by the snow, it pumped up the Pirates' for what would be a hard fought win.

The first quarter started with a goal from Jr. Tommy Saueressig off an assist from Fr. Declan O'Donnell. O'Donnell, who returns from concussion protocol, clearly had no plans of easing into his first game back. Saueressig would score again along with Sr. Jack Doloszycki giving the Pirates' a 3-2 lead going into the second.

It was a back-and-forth second quarter, Chad Akers of Marymount tied the game 3-3 at the eleven minute mark. Sr. Nick Doxey netted a goal to give the Pirates' the one goal lead but Akers for Marymount would score another to tie it up again. Doxey came right back at the Saints with four minutes left to give the Pirates' the 5-4 lead going into half.

It was apparent the high winds and heavy snow affected all aspects of the game for both teams. Each team only cleared roughly 50 percent of the time and they each had over 20 turnovers. This meant plenty of change of possession and a lot of loose balls on the turf. Luckily the Pirates' were able to rely on Hudson Bearden at the faceoff X to secure their possessions, he was almost automatic at 76 percent on the day.

In another up-and-down quarter the Pirates' were unable to gain significant control of the game. Doxey would score two more goals along with Justin Macha and Jack Carolan but this would only give them a 9-8 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

Marymounts' Troy Tangolics notched the first goal of the final quarter to tie the game at 9-9. However the Pirates went on one of their patented runs, scoring three unanswered goals thanks to Tommy Dyson, Cody Foster and Tyler Johnson. With nine minutes remaining, the Pirates' hung on to bring home a 12-11 win in the snow.

After two long road trips Men's Lacrosse returns home for spring break. Their next match up will be against the UMass-Boston Beacons, Tuesday March 15th at 7:00 PM.
