Gents Fall At Millsaps On Sunday, 75-62

The Gents will look to get back in the win column when they face Belhaven on Monday.

Jackson, Miss. - The Centenary men's basketball team fell 75-62 to the Millsaps College Majors in a non-conference contest on Sunday at the Hangar Dome.

The Gents (3-3) will be back in action on Monday in Jackson as they face the Belhaven University Blazers at 6 p.m. Millsaps won for the first time this season to improve to 1-5.

Senior G Chrys Jackson (North Las Vegas, Nev.) scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Gents and senior F Seth Thomas (Kilgore, Texas) joined him in double figures with 10. Sophomore G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) and freshman F Khristian Wilkerson (Killeen, Texas) each scored nine and junior F Jakobi Greenleaf (Houston, Texas) scored seven.

Freshman G Bakari Nelson (Evergreen Park, Ill.) and junior G Kyron Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) each scored three points and freshman G Gerald Murage (Irving, Texas) chipped in two.

Millsaps led 28-27 at halftime and outscored the Maroon and White 47-35 to record the 13-point victory. Four Majors reached double figures, led by 16 from Dakota Gasca. Cameron Lumar scored 13, Aaron Ursin had 12, and Rodney Phillips Jr. scored 10. Drew Roth grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and added four points and a blocked shot.

The Gents struggled shooting the ball, finishing just 31.1 % (19-61) from the floor and were just 9-35 (25.7 %) from beyond the arc while finishing 15-20 from the free throw line for 75 %. Millsaps, on the other hand, shot the ball well overall as the Majors finished 48.3 % (28-58) from the floor. Millsaps was 7-24 (29.2 %) from 3-point range and 12-18 from the free throw line for 66.7 %.

Millsaps dominated on the glass, winning the rebounding battle 42-27. The Majors finished with 34 on the defensive end along with eight offensive boards. Centenary had 21 defensive rebounds and six on the offensive end. The Gents only turned the ball over 11 times and forced Millsaps into 20 turnovers. Centenary tallied 11 assists, five steals and a blocked shot and Millsaps had 14 assists, two steals, and three blocks.

Millsaps finished with 34 points in the paint to Centenary's 20 and 16 second-chance points while the Gents scored just four. Centenary finished with a 21-16 advantage in points off turnovers, finished with a slight advantage in fast break points (11-9), and received 30 points from its bench while the Majors' reserves scored 24.

Millsaps led 24-16 with 6:16 remaining in the first half, the largest lead by either team in the first 20 minutes, but the Gents closed on an 11-4 run to trail by just a point (28-27) at the half. Thomas nailed a trey to tied the score at 30-30 with 19 minutes remaining in the second half but a 23-13 run by the Majors made it 53-43 with 8:34 remaining. Centenary would cut its deficit to single digits on multiple occasions following that run, but Millsaps maintained control of the game and held a double-digit lead for the final three minutes to seal the win.
