The fourth-ranked Colorado College volleyball team clinched a share of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season crown with three-set victories over the University of Dallas and Johnson & Wales University on Saturday.
CC must wait until Sunday afternoon to learn if it will win the title outright, or share it with Trinity University. TU faces third-place Southwestern University tomorrow in Shreveport, La., at noon CT.
Senior middle hitter
Myca Steffey-Bean and sophomore opposite hitter
Laney Swan had nine kills apiece as Colorado College began the day with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 win over the Crusaders.
Swan hit .500 with just one error on 16 attacks, while Steffey-Bean finished at .400 on 16 swings.
Junior outside hitters
Jordan Mullen and
Haley Harris finished with seven kills apiece.
Steffey-Bean put down five kills on seven attempts, while Swan produced kills on all four of her swings as the Tigers led throughout the first set.
Mullen had kills on all four of her attacks as Colorado College snapped a 15-15 tie in the second set with a 10-5 surge to grab a 2-0 lead.
The Crusaders opened an early five-point cushion in the final set, but CC scored 12 of the next 16 points to take a 15-12 lead. After Dallas scored on a kill by Elizabeth Smith, the Tigers began to create some separation with a 4-1 surge.
UD battled back to with 22-20, only to see Colorado College close out the match by scoring the final three points.
Abigail Porras led the Crusaders with 11 kills.
Isabel Garcia added seven kills and had a hand in four of UD's seven blocked shots.
Colorado College closed out the regular season with a 25-19, 25-13, 14-15 victory at JWU.
Steffey-Bean hit .467 with eight kills on 15 attacks. Swan finished with seven kills, while Mullen added six.
Isabella Vasquez led the defensive effort with 18 digs, while Steffey-Bean had a hand in five blocked shots.
Trailing 7-6 early in the first set, the Tigers utilized a 6-1 run to take a lead they would not surrender.
The Wildcats also led early in set No. 2, but junior setter
Lizzy Counts served three of her six aces during a surge of eight consecutive points as CC opened a 17-10 lead and never looked back.
After a Brooke Paxton kill trimmed Colorado College's lead to 18-13, Mullen answered with a kill and Steffey-Bean served out the final six points of the set.
Counts opened the final set with three consecutive aces and the Tigers raced to an early 9-3 lead.
Johnson & Wales was within 13-8 after a Paxton kill, but CC scored four of the next five points and went on to close out the match.
The Wildcats hit .000 as a team and became the seven opponent to hit be held out of positive territory.
Paxton recorded 10 kills for the Wildcats, while Alyssa Christiansen had 19 digs.
Colorado College improved to 29-2 overall and will ride a nine-match winning streak into the SCAC Championship, which begins on Friday, Nov. 2, at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas.
The tournament bracket will be released on Sunday, Oct. 28, after the final regular-season matches are played in Shreveport.
