Despite playing a man down for almost 53 minutes, the Colorado College men's soccer team earned a well-deserved point with a 1-1 draw at Southwestern University on Saturday.
The Tigers broke through in the 35th minute when sophomore defender
Noah Johnson got on the end of an
Alexander Ward corner kick and scored on a header at the back post.
The momentum turned 12 minutes into the second half when CC went a man down after Johnson was shown a red card.
"The red card was very disappointing," head coach
Scott Palguta said. "It was a moment of frustration from Noah, but we have to do better to control our emotions amongst the chaos."
Keleher Felton made three of his six saves during the final 33 minutes of regulation time, but the Pirates leveled the score in the late in the 86th minute when Theo Givens poked home a loose ball off of Garrison Van Houten header from the back post.
Colorado College won three corner kicks and put a pair of shots on target during the extra 20 minutes, but was unable to score for a second time.
"The group dug in and did a tremendous job in tough circumstance while playing a man down," Palguta said. "I am very proud of their effort and thought we managed the overtime periods really well, even creating a couple chances to win the game."
Even though Southwestern played more than half the game with an extra man, it only managed a 12-11 edge in total shots.
CC finished with an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Colorado College Standouts
Skyler Stark-Ragsdale led the Tigers with three shots.
Kevin Peterson put both of his shots on target.
Southwestern Standouts
Nathaniel Blake put both of his shots on target.
Jack Viles had a pair of saves, while his defense also stopped two shots.
