Celts give strong showing at ASC Invitational

ABILENE, Texas – In only their second fall event as a program, the University of St. Thomas women's tennis team made a name for itself at the American Southwest Conference Fall Invitational, hosted by Hardin-Simmons University.

Celt tennis players won two matches in five of the six singles flights, led by Ana Maria Gonzalez winning the Flight "B" tournament. The Celts also claimed two consolation bracket wins in doubles play.

Gonzalez breezed into the final of her bracket, not allowing her opponents to take more than two games in each of her first two rounds. She opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win over East Texas Baptist's Cassidy Wilcoxson, and then cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over McMurry's Neah Garza.

In the bracket final, Gonzalez claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hardin-Simmons' Landry Laywell.

Celts also advanced to the finals in Flights "A" and "D". In the "A" bracket, Alejandra Lopez defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor's Vicky Rendon 6-1, 6-3, and then won a thrilling three-set match over McMurry's Claire Hillyer by a score of 6-7 (4-6), 6-1, 10-6. In the final, Lopez was edged 7-5, 6-4 by HSU's Kaitlyn Hathorn.

In flight "D", Asan Atilla defeated ETBU's Corinne Hall 6-3, 6-4, and then claimed a 7-5, 6-0 win over Schreiner's Marlee Daniel.

UST's Alyssa Davila took third place in Flight "C", recording wins over ETBU's Kelsey Roberts and Concordia Texas' Claire Austin. In the "E" flight, Callighan Ard took third place as she defeated UMHB's Reilly Fletcher and ETBU's Abby Jones.

In doubles play, Gonzalez and Ard won the consolation bracket in Flight "B", while Atilla and Anna Ta won the consolation bracket in Flight "D."

The Celts women's tennis team returns to Abilene this weekend when they take part in the ITA Southwest Regional Tennis Tournament.
