Comeback Falls Short for 'Roo Baseball

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team rallied from six runs down but came up one short on Saturday, falling 7-6 to visiting Blackburn College. The 'Roos are now 5-2 overall this season.

After a scoreless first inning, the Beavers plated five runs in the second to grab a 5-0 lead. Austin College pushed one run across in the third on an RBI single by Jake Webster, but Blackburn scored once in the fourth and again in the fifth to go on top 7-1. That remained the score until the bottom of the seventh, when Nick Flynn came home on a catcher's interference call and Webster followed up with an RBI single. Brandon Evans plated two more in the next at-bat to cut it to a 7-5 game.

Branson Vrazel scored in the bottom of the ninth to trim it to a 7-6 game, but the 'Roos would come up short with the tying run on second base in the inning. Ryan Culp took the loss for Austin College, surrendering seven runs - six earned - on 11 hits in 5.0 innings of work. Evans, Zack Mahoney, and Justin Alphonse each collected two hits to lead the 'Roos at the plate, and Vrazel had a pair of stolen bases in the loss.

Austin College and Blackburn wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
