'Roo Men Top Schreiner

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College men's basketball team picked up its second straight win on Friday evening, topping Schreiner University 84-78 to improve to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The 'Roos shot 49.2% from the field in the game, knocking down 6-of-12 three pointers and forcing Schreiner into 22 turnovers to pick up the victory. Austin College held the Mountaineers to just 40.6% shooting overall and 20.6% from beyond the arc while getting 23 points from Michael Holland and 22 from Devin Roland. Four players reached double figures in the scoring column for the 'Roos, who raced out to a 47-34 halftime lead and were able to hold off a late charge from Schreiner to come away with the win.

Schreiner limited the 'Roos to 35.5% shooting in the second half and poured in 44 points after the break in their comeback effort, but after the Mountaineers cut it to a two point game at 80-78 with 20 seconds left Austin College would score the final four points of the game to seal the victory. Austin College led by as many as 18 points, but the Mountaineers were able to chip away at the margin thanks in large part to a 26-to-2 edge in second chance points and a 51-to-34 rebounding margin.

Holland scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half, adding nine rebounds on the night. Roland added eight rebounds to his 22-point performance, his third straight game with at least 20 points. Kameron Hill was 4-of-4 from the field, 3-of-3 from long distance, and added a free throw in two attempts to score 12 points and Luke Brumbaugh chipped in 12 points and three blocked shots for the 'Roos.

Schreiner was led by Matthew Rindahl, who scored 21 points and pulle down 19 rebounds. Alex Dehoyos scored 20 for the Mountaineers and Chase Pinter added 14.

Austin College is back in action tomorrow when they host Trinity University with tip set for 4:00 p.m.
