GEORGETOWN, Texas - With a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon the Southwestern women's soccer team closed out the back end of a home conference weekend, sweeping two crucial SCAC matches. The wins improve SU to 7-5-1 on the year and 3-3 in the conference while Millsaps falls to 7-7 and 0-5.
Southwestern had numerous looks at the goal but were just off on the timing and missed out on goal scoring opportunities. The Pirates took an early 1-0 lead when Berkeley Mengwasser served a lofting pass from the right side into the middle of box to Danielle Madison who headed it home.
In an active attacking first half Southwestern had 12 shots, seven on goal, and held the Majors to only one shot, but went into the break with just a 1-0 lead.
Millsaps came out of the break strong, making a couple of well organized attacks and had good looks at goal, but the defensive line of Madi Statchura (pictured), Mengwasser, Sarah Holifield and Lyndsey Resnik worked hard to maintain the one goal lead.
Kylie O'Connor nearly made it a two goal lead but her breakaway shot deflected off the near post holding the lead to just one. Just a minute later the two goal lead was realized when Laura Ornelas played a perfect through-ball that Ashley Gallegos ran down and after a misplay by a MC defender cut the sharp angle and put the ball into the back of the net giving SU a more comfortable 2-0 lead.
Southwestern had 21 shots on the afternoon and nine corners while holding Millsaps to four shots and three corners.
The Pirates return to non-conference action with a game in San Antonio, Texas against regional-opponent Chapman on Sunday beginning at noon.
