Austin College Rallies in Fourth Quarter to Defeat Southwestern

SHERMAN, Texas – Austin College got a big fourth-quarter performance from Ally Longaker to come from behind and defeat the Southwestern University Pirates women's basketball team 68-62 to split the season series.

Three Pirates scored in double figures, led by first year guard Lauren Fulenwider's 13 points, shooting 4-for-9 from the 3-point line. Zhazze Brown scored 12 points on 14 shots with three rebounds and two assists. Cecily Woolfolk scored 10 points and two blocks.

Fulenwider caught fire in the second quarter, scoring 10 points on 3-for-5 shooting with one made free throw to bring the Pirates within one at 35-34 at the break.

The Pirate defense locked in during the third quarter, holding Austin College to 3-for-10 shooting and forcing six turnovers, including a pair of steals by Fulenwider. Southwestern also struggled from the field but got four offensive rebounds to take a 46-42 lead into the fourth.

Longaker hit three consecutive jumpers in the middle of the fourth quarter to bring Austin College within one and Kacie West and Reagan Chiaverini each hit a pair of free throws to give the Kangaroos a 58-55 lead. Longaker helped seal the game with free throws down the stretch.

West led Austin College with 19 points, shooting 5-for-12 from the field and 3-for-5 from the 3-point line while making all six free-throw attempts. Longaker had 17 points on 11 shots with nine rebounds. Austin College finished the game 21-for-54 (38.9 percent) with an 8-for-20 (40 percent) performance from deep.

Southwestern shot 23-for-62 (37.1 percent), including 8-for-17 from deep (47.1 percent) and 9-for-12 from the free-throw line.

With the loss, the Pirates drop to 7-15 on the season, including 5-10 in conference play. Southwestern will face Dallas on the road tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
