The Colorado College women's tennis team came just shy of winning its sixth straight match with a 5-4 loss to Wisconsin-La Crosse Monday night in Orlando, Fla.
The Tigers, now 7-6 this season, captured two of the three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead. Sophomore
Fiona Cerf and freshman
Kendal McGinnis won the No. 1 match, 8-1, over
the 21st-ranked team in the country for Division III, Bridget Bellissimo and Kimmy Mrozek, while freshmen Simone Hall and
Annie Zlevor downed
Bryanne Blanton and Alaina Bublitz, 8-5, at No. 3. The Eagles came back, however, and won four of the six singles matches to clinch the team victory. Sophomore
Natalia Dellavalle won at the No. 3 position, 6-1, 6-2, over Jennifer Graham and Zlevor edged Sadie Spahn, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(8), at the No. 5 spot.
UW-La Crosse won its four singles matches in straight sets, including a 7-5, 6-3 victory by Bellissimo over Cerf at the top spot.
"Kendal and Fiona played lights out in doubles today, beating the No. 21 team in the country," head coach
Anthony Weber said. "The scary part is they are still leaving points on the court with their movement, but they're making better decisions all-around. Annie also did a great job throughout the day by winning singles in three sets and taking a doubles point."
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, March 15 against Macalester College beginning at 5:30 p.m. (ET).
