Tigers Rally to Defeat Austin College

Box Score Colorado College erupted for three goals during the final 48 minutes and rallied to defeat Austin College, 3-1, on Friday night at Washburn Field.

The 21st-ranked Tigers improved to 7-1-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with their sixth consecutive victory.

Jack McCormick struck for his second game winner of the season in the 60th minute, scoring from five yards out in the center of the box on a flick from junior midfielder Tommy Riley.

"We were looking to get a set piece goal," McCormick said. "Timmy (Huettel) played a good ball and Tommy flicked it on to me. I knocked it in with my left foot for an easy finish."
In addition to his goal, the junior defender anchored the defense that allowed just seven shots.

"Jack has wonderful instincts," head coach Scott Palguta said. "He's one of those guys who has a nose for the ball. It's great that he's coming up with goals, but don't overlook what he's done in the defensive third. He's been a leader back there."

Max Grossenbacher gave CC a two-goal advantage with 13:40 to play when he converted his third penalty kick of the season. The senior midfielder leads the team with seven goals and 15 points.

The Roos took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when sophomore forward Thomas Quick chased down a long ball on the left side from freshman midfielder Juan Ramirez and scored with a low crossing shot to the right corner.

"They came out with a lot of spark," McCormick said. "We were a little flat and got caught pushing up the field. I was confident we would get one back before halftime."

Grossenbacher leveled the score a little less than 12 minutes later with a shot at the left post that caromed off Austin's Chris Abad-Jacobi.

With his second multiple-goal game of the season, Grossenbacher now has five tallies in his last four contests. He now is riding a career-best four-game goal streak.

Sophomore goalkeeper Theo Hooker finished with three saves, the best of which came early in the first half. He denied Austin's Jack Wheaton from just outside the left post in the eighth minute and came off his line to stop the sophomore midfielder a second time 18 minutes later.

The Roos launched seven total shots, but only two during the second half.

"We had a poor first half overall, but we started to grow into the game towards the end of the half." Palguta said. "We took that as a positive and gave the guys credit for climbing back into the game. We thought we were on top of things in the second half and the score line was fair in the end."

CC launched 20 shots and compiled an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Austin sophomore goalkeeper Michael Morin made three saves during the first half. Freshman Joseph Khalaf, who stopped two shots during the final 45 minutes, took the loss.

The Roos slipped to 4-7-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the conference.

Colorado College plays host to Centenary College on Sunday at 11 a.m.
