CC tops Trinity for SCAC lead

Box Score Colorado College climbed into sole possession of first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 68-66 victory at Trinity University on Sunday afternoon.

The visiting Tigers overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to improve to 4-0 in league play and square their season record at 6-6.

Junior guard Jake Tramutolo went 3-for-3 from behind the arc to cap a 25-12 run to open the second half. His trey with 13:10 remaining gave CC its first lead since early in the first half.

Trinity tied the game at 50-50 when senior forward Heath Hopson completed a three-point play with 8:30 to go, but freshman forward James Lonergan put Colorado College ahead to stay when he knocked down a three pointer 17 seconds later.

Senior forward Ian Rewoldt gave CC a 66-59 lead when he sank a pair of free throws with 2:18 on the clock, however Hopson scored five consecutive points to cut his team's deficit to two points with a little more than a minute to play.

A Lonergan free throw put Colorado College up by three with 16 ticks remaining, but Hopson scored the last of his game-high 27 points 10 seconds later to pull his team to within 67-66 10 seconds later.

After junior point guard Ryan Milne made the second of two free throws to give his team a two-point advantage, Hopson was unable to connect on a drive in the lane at the buzzer and CC escaped with the two-point triumph.

Sophomore forward Chris Lesnansky paced Colorado College with 18 points and nine rebounds. Tramutolo finished with 12 points, while Milne added with 11 and four assists.

Lonergan posted season highs with nine points and eight boards, with all but one rebound coming in the second half.

After making just four of 16 three-point shots during the first half, CC went 5-for-10 from behind the arc in the final 20 minutes. TU made just three of seven long-range shots.

Trinity, which saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end, slipped to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in SCAC play.

The teams will meet again on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Colorado College plays host to Johnson and Wales University on Tuesday night.
