JACKSON, Miss. – Senior forward Josh Spencer scored the
first and last goals of the game and the Pirates had 19 more shots
than the Majors, but Southwestern still dropped the conference
match-up on Friday night 3-2. SU falls to 5-5 on the season and 1-2
in SCAC conference action while Millsaps improves to 7-5 and
2-3.
Spencer wasted no time in the game, giving the Pirates the lead
just five minutes into the contest when he gathered a rebounded
shot off the crossbar and buried it in the back of the net to put
SU up 1-0.
Just 10 minutes later Millsaps scored the equalizer on a penalty
kick by Daniel Moise. Moise scored again 24 minutes later on a
through ball to give the Majors the 2-1 lead going into
halftime.
Southwestern applied tremendous pressure to the Millsaps defense as
they earned five corner kicks in a span of 2:10, but were unable to
get the ball past the Majors’ goalkeeper Dylan Broussard.
As the second half began Millsaps was able to extend their lead as
Brandon Mong scored his came away from a scramble with the ball and
fired a shot that sailed over the head of sophomore goal keeper
Nick Pierce and into the back of the net increasing the Millsaps
lead to 3-1 just 3:13 into the second half.
Things turned very physical from this point forward and the Pirates
cut the lead to 3-2 when Spencer scored his second goal of the
match with seven minutes remaining.
With tensions high and time running out Southwestern put the
pressure on and with 1:22 remaining in regulation thought they
scored the tying goal, but after the center official talked things
over with his assistant they deemed the scoring player to be
offside and the goal was disallowed.
The Pirates dominated the contest, leading in shots (23-4) and
corners (10-5) but were behind in the all important goals. They
remain on the road as they travel to face Birmingham-Southern on
Sunday at 11:00 am.
