Southwestern shuts out Trinity on Saturday, 48-0

SAN ANTONIO – Justin Broussard and Matt Gillen set conference records, as the Southwestern football team rolled to a dominating 48-0 victory over rival Trinity on Saturday afternoon at Trinity Football Stadium.

Broussard amassed nine tackles and including 5.5 sacks, which set a new Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference single-game record.

Gillen caught nine passes for 135 yards and he reached the end zone five times overall. The senior wide received hauled in four touchdown catches and fell on a fumble in the end zone during the first quarter, which also counted as a receiving touchdown. His five receiving touchdowns are the most in SCAC history.

Meanwhile, Bryan Hicks came off the bench and threw for 261 yards and six touchdowns.

The Pirates (3-3, 2-0 SCAC) outgained the Tigers (2-4, 0-2 SCAC) 499-148, including 376-128 in the passing game.

Southwestern posted nine sacks and shut out an opponent for the first time since Sept. 16, 1950 (Southwest Texas State, 28-0).

The Pirates will host Texas Lutheran (2-4, 2-0 SCAC) next Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. at Birkelbach Field.

NOTES
• The three victories on the season are the most by the Pirates since 1950 (5-5 record).
• The 48 points scored by the Pirates is the most since Southwestern defeated Brooks Army Medical Center, 60-0, on Sept. 25, 1948.
• It marked Southwestern's first win over Trinity since Nov. 1, 1941, a 13-6 decision in Waxahachie.
• It also marked the third shutout by Southwestern against Trinity, in a series dating back to 1909.
• The last time Trinity was shut out by an opponent was Nov. 9, 1994 (0-28 vs. Washington & Jefferson). The Tigers had not been shut out in the regular season since Sept. 18, 1993 (0-31 at Austin College).
• Southwestern led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and 28-0 at halftime.
Kenneth Wynn Jr. (14 yards) and Colten Shea (71 yards) also caught touchdown passes.
• Shea's touchdown was his first since the 2013 season, when he scored seven times.
• The Pirates did not allow a sack for the first time since the program was reinstated in 2013.
• Southwestern averaged 7.3 yards per play (68 offensive plays/499 yards).
