BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Southwestern University and the
Panthers alternated goals and were tied through regulation in
Sunday’s SCAC match-up, but BSC scored five minutes into
overtime to hand SU their third loss of the season, 3-2. The
Pirates fall to 7-3-1 while Birmingham-Southern improves to
7-5.
Southwestern came out attacking and took the early lead thanks to
an unassisted goal by sophomore Jillian Curran in the third minute.
The 1-0 lead would hold until halftime thanks to senior keeper
Cheryl Duncan and the Pirate defense that kept everything out of
the net and the Panthers scoreless.
The second half was a different story as it took just three minutes
for BSC to even the count with a goal by Menton. A free kick by
Rice in the 61st minute put the Panthers on top momentarily, but
Pirates’ sophomore Laura Ornelas (pictured) evened the score
less than six minutes later with an unassisted goal. Regulation
would end in a 2-2 tie, forcing SU into their second overtime match
of the weekend.
Birmingham-Southern captured the win six minutes into overtime to
hand the Pirates the loss.
Southwestern dominated the shots and corner kicks categories for
the game. The Pirates had 20 shots to BSC’s 13 and took seven
more corners (8-1) than the Panthers. Duncan recorded seven saves
while Birmingham-Southern’s keepers had 11 total.
The Pirates will return to the field for a fall break match at home
against Hardin-Simmons University on Tuesday at 3:00 pm before
returning to conference home action over the weekend.
