
LAS VEGAS, NV – Southwestern’s women’s
basketball team knew they would be in for tough games at the Trip
Sports Las Vegas Hoopla as they faced Beloit and #11
Wisconsin-Whitewater in non-conference action. SU fell to Beloit
54-48 on Friday evening and 73-51 to UWW on Saturday night.
The Pirates had trouble shooting from the floor in game one,
shooting 35.4% from the field and 7.7% from beyond the arc.
Beloit jumped out to a quick nine point lead, 15-6, just six
minutes into the game, but Southwestern tied it back up 17-17 on a
three pointer by junior Shae Seagraves halfway through the first
half.
After the sixth tie of the half, 23-23 with four minutes remaining,
SU went on a run with a pair of steals and layups to go up by
three, 31-28, going into the break.
The Pirates opened the second half well, building their lead to
six, 28-34, on three free throws by senior Jessica Herbst.
Beloit was able to pull ahead four minutes later and the lead flip
flopped for the remainder of the game until the Buccaneers snagged
the lead for the final time 47-46 with 6:29 remaining.
On Saturday Southwestern game with visions of upset on their mind,
facing #11 Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Pirates hung close through the
first half, not allowing UWW ahead by more than 11 points and
pulled within eight, 36-28, heading into halftime.
In the second half the Warhawks jumped on the Pirates a lead by 16
points six minutes into the second half, holding SU to six points
in the same span. Southwestern was never able to pull within fewer
than double digits as they fell 73-51.
Junior Staley Mullins was the leading scorer in both games, scoring
12 points and 16 points respectively. Seagraves scored 20 points
over the two game stretch while senior Katie Kern led with 15
rebounds on the weekend.
The losses fall SU to 3-5 on the year. They return to action after
the holidays with a home tournament on December 28-29. Central
College out of Iowa will be the Pirates opening round match-up on
the 28th at 5:00 pm.
