Tigers go the distance to beat Union, 3-2

Laura Goldsmith and Kristen Liberty each posted a double-double as No. 14 Colorado College went the distance to beat Union University, 3-2 Thursday evening in Fred DeLay Gymnasium.

Goldsmith tied a team-high 11 kills and 20 digs to get her sixth double-double of the season to lead CC, while Liberty added 11 kills and 12 digs to obtain her fourth double-double of the year.

In the first set, with the score tied 17-17, the Tigers went on a 4-0 run off of four kills to retake the lead. CC went on to win the first set, 25-20.

The Tigers dominated the second set, hitting a .464 attack percentage to beat the Lady Bulldogs, 25-14. CC was ahead 3-2 early in the second set when it went on an 11-3 run to take an early nine point advantage over Union.

The Tigers had a 10-7 lead midway through the third set, but the Lady Bulldogs fought back with an 8-0 run to take the lead. Union held on to its lead to beat CC, 25-21.  

Union continued its momentum in the fourth set, hitting a .355 attack percentage to win the set, 25-19 and tie the game at two sets apiece.

The Tigers rallied back in the fifth set taking an early 5-1 advantage. They were able to hold onto their lead and win the game, 15-11.

Senior Amy Schornack ran the offense for CC, dishing out a team-high 41 assists. Junior Kate Squires added 11 kills to tie the team-high on offense.

Senior Hannah Varnell tied a team-high 20 digs to help lead the team in the back row. Sophomore Devin Wilkinson led the Tigers at the net with six blocks, while Schornack added five blocks on defense.

With the win, Colorado College impoved to 14-4 on the season and 2-0 in five-set matches. Union fell to 7-8 on the season.

The Tigers continue on the road this weekend when they travel to Memphis, Tenn. for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Central-West Crossover matches on Oct. 1-2. CC faces No. 15 Southwestern University at 12 p.m. and Austin College at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
