The Colorado College men's lacrosse team turned in a pair of dominating defensive efforts to overwhelm Southwestern University and Centenary College in back-to-back Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference games on Friday afternoon at Washburn Field.
CC began the day with a 16-5 victory over the Pirates, then throttled the Gents, 25-1.
"Our team played like they had something to prove today," head coach
Sean Woods said. "And coming off an embarrassing loss against Salisbury, I knew they would. We challenged our team all week to be more physical, more disciplined and more ground ball hungry. They really responded."
After Jack Doloszycki gave Southwestern the lead 58 seconds into the game,
Makay Hansen ignited a six-goal outburst in a five-minute span that put the Tigers ahead 6-1 with 5:58 to play in the first quarter.
Anders Erickson scored twice and set up a third goal during the run, while
Luca Lietti had a goal and an assist.
The Pirates cut their deficit to 6-3 on goals by Doloszycki and Will Thompson, but they went 23 minutes without another one before Jack Carolan scored 5:05 into the second half. During that time, Colorado College added five goals to extend its lead to 11-3.
Thirteen seconds after Carolan's goal, Hansen's man-up marker triggered a 5-1 surge that closed out the scoring.
The Tigers killed off all five of Southwestern's man-up opportunities that lasted a total of four minutes.
Billy Hutchison led CC with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while
Kyle Lee caused three turnovers and picked up one ground ball.
Erickson paced the offense with three goals and three assists, while Hansen finished with three goals and one helper.
Jack Haims and
Dylan Brown each struck for a pair of goals.
Colorado College finished the game with a 56-17 advantage in total shots and a 38-24 edge in ground balls.
Ben Anastos stopped six shots and improved to 6-1 in goal.
In the victory over Centenary, Hansen scored a pair of goals during the first 39 seconds of the game and the Tigers were never threatened.
CC led 13-0 at the half, and after John Mark Waniewski put the Gents on the board 1:09 into the third quarter, the Tigers tacked on 12 more goals without the services of their first and second offensive unite.
Philip Gisler led Colorado College with four goals and five assists.
Brant Billingsley finished with three goals and a pair of assists, while
Matt Spencer produced three goals and an assist.
Fifteen Tigers scored at least one goal, while 18 had at least one point.
First-year goaltender
Kyle Mezrow made three saves to earn the victory in his first career start, while classmate
Jack Dresser stopped three shots during the final 30 minutes.
Arvin Fieldman went 8-for-9 on faceoffs and led CC with nine ground balls.
It marked the third and fourth times this season the Tigers held an opponent to five goals or fewer in a game.
Colorado College Standouts
Charlie Harrington won a combined 13 of 16 faceoffs and recorded nine ground balls.
Dylan Wells had a goal and two assists against Southwestern.

Zac Asbury had a pair of assists.
Drew Alvarado made 15 saves for the Pirates.

Thomas Siskron made 16 saves for the Gents.
