Tigers Prevail in Battle of Unbeatens

Eva King factored in five goals and Alena Stern recorded 11 saves to help No. 21 Colorado College earn a hard-fought 12-8 victory over Hamline University in a battle of unbeaten teams on Sunday afternoon at Klas Field.

King scored four goals for the fifth time this season and set up another to reach the 70-point mark for the second year in a row. Her current total ties her for 10th on the program's single-season list and is just three points behind her personal best of 73 set last year.

King struck for three goals and set up another during a 10-3 run that saw the Tigers turn a 3-1 deficit with 17:03 remaining in the first half into an 11-6 lead with 9:05 remaining in the game.

The Pipers led 3-1 a little more than 10 minutes into the game after Radian Lenz scored back-to-back goals, but CC answered with four in a row to take the lead for good.

Bella Beattie started the comeback with 17:03 to play in the first half, and then Avery Bell leveled the score 2:01 later off a feed from Maggie O'Donnell.

King put the Tigers ahead for the second time after taking a feed from Maggie O'Donnell with 13:46 to play in the first half, and then O'Donnell gave her team a 5-3 lead at the 4:26 mark.

Alycia Monserrate Novotny cut Colorado College's lead in half with 1:45 remaining in the first half, however Lauren Pejza and King scored 14 seconds apart to give the Tigers a three-goal lead for the first time 2:43 into the second half.

Just when it appeared CC was beginning to take control of the contest, Hamline countered with markers from Maya Hernandez and Novotny to pull within 7-6 with 22:57 remaining in the game.

With the contest's outcome on the line, the Tiger defense stepped up and held the Pipers scoreless for a little more than 15 minutes.

During that time, King and O'Donnell recorded a goal and an assist apiece as Colorado College broke the game open with four consecutive goals to build its largest at 11-6 lead with 9:05 remaining.

O'Donnell finished with two goals and a pair of assists.

The Pipers mounted one last comeback with goals from Novotny and Hernandez, but Allie Thuet closed out the scoring 84 seconds later to seal the victory with the second of her two goals.

CC finished with a 30-25 advantage in total shots and a 25-24 edge in ground balls.

Sophie Murphy, Ellie Meyer and Nikki Blair led the Tigers with three caused turnovers. Murphy and Meyer also picked up a team-high four ground balls.

Each team captured 11 draw controls.

Stern stopped 11 shots, her fifth game this season and the 12th of her career with double-digit saves.

Molly Dione produced 14 saves for Hamline, which slipped to 11-1.

CC puts its school-record 14-game winning streak on the line this Thursday when the Tigers visit No. 16 TCNJ.
