'Roo Softball Splits with Ozarks

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College softball team split its doubleheader with the University of the Ozarks on Sunday afternoon, falling 11-10 in extra innings in game one before taking a 3-1 game two victory. The 'Roos are now 2-6 overall on the year.

In game one, the 'Roos built an 8-2 lead heading into the fifth before Ozarks stormed back to eventually tie things up in the top of the seventh, with the Eagles pulling out the win in the eighth. Ozarks struck first in the game with two runs coming across in the top of the first, but Austin College responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead, highlighted by a 2-run double by Ashley Mayorga. Austin College pushed five runs across in the third, as Marisa Duke, Jaide Vidal, and Mari Prazak each drove in a run before Mayorga laced her second 2-run double of the game to make it 8-2.

The Eagles cut it to an 8-4 lead in the top of the fifth, but Avery Atencio singled to plate a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-4. Ozarks got two more runs in the sixth before Vidal drove in a run to make it 10-6 heading into the final frame. An RBI triple got things going for Ozarks in the top of the seventh, with a run-scoring double following to make it 10-8. Two more runs would come across to square things up and force extras, where Ozarks would get the game-winner with Austin College unable to even things up in the bottom half of the inning.

Reina Serrano took the loss for Austin College after surrendering four runs - three earned - on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. Vidal went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases, and Mayorga finished 2-for-4 with four runs batted in. Aubri Dale Smith added a 2-for-4 performance at the dish for the 'Roos.

Austin College grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game two and never looked back, with Sarah Ramirez and Taylor Levan providing the early offensive punch for the 'Roos. Ramirez drove in another run in the third to make it a 3-0 game, but that's all the cushion Jordan Proctor would need, with Ozarks getting one run back in the fourth but nothing else the rest of the way. Proctor went 6.0 innings to get the win, giving up one run on seven hits, and Serrano earned the save after pitching a hitless seventh to secure the victory for the 'Roos.

Ramirez went 1-for-2 with two RBI to lead the way at the plate, and Levan, Prazak, Proctor, Atencio, and Mayorga each collected one hit in the game.

Austin College heads to Jackson, Mississippi this weekend for a quartet of games, taking on Mississippi University for Women at 9:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, while also playing LaGrange on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Millsaps at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
