HOUSTON,TX- In a high-stakes showdown between conference rivals, the University of St. Thomas men's basketball team delivered a statement win at home, defeating Trinity 81-69. The victory improves the Celts to 22-2 overall and 13-1 in conference.
From the opening tip, the Celts set the tone, jumping out to an 11-3 lead. Trinity responded by cutting the deficit to five, but UST quickly regained control. Marion Williams knocked down a three-pointer, followed by a mid-range jumper from Eren Ertan, pushing the lead to 23-15. The Celts then erupted on a scoring run, with Ricky Altamirano drilling two three-pointers and Charles Gitonga adding a layup to extend the lead to 33-18. Before halftime, UST continued to apply pressure, heading into the break with a commanding 39-20 advantage.
The second half saw Trinity fight back, chipping away at the deficit. The Tigers cut the lead to 14 with 13 minutes left and then made a push to bring it within nine after a three-pointer and a layup. With the Celts struggling to slow Trinity's momentum, Angel Johnson delivered a crucial basket to halt the Tigers' run. St. Thomas then re-established a double-digit lead, going up 69-59 with two minutes remaining. Despite Trinity's defensive pressure, the Celts remained poised and closed out the game for a well-earned victory.
Several players contributed in big ways, led by Andrew Adebo, who posted a near double-double with 19 points, seven rebounds, and five steals. Johnson added 16 points, seven rebounds, and six steals, while Gitonga and Nathan Kongolo each contributed 12 points. Altamirano was a sharpshooter from deep, knocking down three triples on his way to 11 points. The Celts' defense was also key, forcing 13 steals and holding Trinity in check when it mattered most.
