RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team ended a stretch of nine-straight matches in Texas, including seven at home, with a 5-0 victory over Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
This is the seventh time the Vaqueros (5-3-1) have scored at least five goals in a match in program history. The last time was in a 6-0 home win over Alabama State on Aug. 24.
The Vaqueros scored early and often, as senior Mission Veterans alum
Amanda Lozano notched her first-career goal at 1:56. Then, 36 seconds later, sophomore Sharyland alum
Isabella Marinaro scored her second goal of the season to make the score 2-0.
Graduate student
Katherine Stokely added her first-career goal on a free kick in the 59
thminute to put the Vaqueros up 3-0.
Freshman
Jacqueline Zapata added another goal in the 75
thminute for her first of her career while freshman
Anna Torslov scored her first-career goal for the icing on the cake in the 79
thminute.
The Vaqueros outshot the Bulldogs 34-0, including 15-0 on goal. The 34 shots are the third most in a match in program history and the most since attempting a program record 43 shots at Hampton on Sept. 23, 2016. The 15 shots on goal tie for the sixth-most in program history and UTRGV's highest total since Oct. 22, 2017, when the team attempted 20 shots on goal in a home match against Chicago State.
Senior
Diana Ansah and sophomore
Anna Barkey led the Vaqueros with four shots each. Two of Ansah's shots were on goal.
Senior
Kinga Szemik (4-3-1) and sophomore
Maile Lunardi each played one half for the shutout.
UTRGV closes out non-conference play on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Southern Illinois.
