'Roo Baseball Rallies Past Centenary

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team got home runs from Jake Webster and Brett Taff as the 'Roos rallied past Centenary College 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Baker Field. The 'Roos are now 5-8 overall and 1-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Centenary got on the board in the top of the first, taking advantage of a two-out error to go ahead 1-0. That would remain the score until the bottom of the fifth, when Bennett Reagan brought home James Wyche to square things up. Austin College took its first lead of the day in the sixth inning, as Webster blasted his first career homer, a two-run shot to left that gave the 'Roos a 3-1 lead.

The Gents got one run back in the top of the seventh as Tyler Welch ripped a pinch hit single to right, bringing home Preston Ludwick to make it 3-2, but Taff provided his pitching staff with an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning when he belted his fourth round-tripper of the season to right center.

Austin College took its 4-2 lead into the top of the ninth, when Jake Thomas came on and got through the heart of Centenary's lineup in order to earn his first career save. Ryan Culp got the win, coming on and tossing 3.0 innings in relief while surrendering one run on two hits. Gonzalez tossed 5.0 strong innings to open the game, giving up just a single unearned run on three hits.

Webster finished the game going 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Taff went 1-for-4. Cody Goggins added a 1-for-3 performance at the dish. Five different players had a single hit apiece for Centenary, while Connor Cudd took the loss after giving up three  runs in 2.0 innings of work.
