Softball Splits Home Opener against UT Tyler

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern rebounded from a 13-1 loss in game one to shutout the University of Texas Tyler 4-0 in game two to split their home opener double header on Sunday. The Pirates sit at 3-5 on the season.

UT Tyler scored three runs in the top of the first, aided by some lucky breaks for the Patriots and two Pirate errors.

With the wind blowing out the Patriots hit homeruns in the third and fourth innings to go up by five, 5-0, through three and a half innings. Haley Hughes (pictured) got a homerun of her own in the bottom of the inning to bring Southwestern within four, 5-1, through four.

Tyler piled on eight runs in the top of the seventh and despite getting a runner on base in the bottom half of the inning Southwestern was unable to score, ending the game with a 13-1 loss.

Hughes was 2-2 with one RBI and one run scored while Kaylee Kucharski went 1-1 in a pinch hit role for the Pirates.

Southwestern was the first to strike in game two, scoring one run in the second inning. Hughes reached on a single up the middle and she hustled around the bags when two Patriots misplayed Jacquelin Rosson's grounder to short.

SU continued to press and got runners in scoring position after back to back singles by Amanda Ambrose and Taylor Turpin. Kayla Irvin's slow roller to second base was just what Ambrose needed to score and put SU up by two, 2-0 after three.

Rosson led off the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle and Tessa Galloway followed with a single to the exact same location and Ambrose's bloop infield single loaded the bases for Turpin.  Turpin's line drive was caught just inches from the dirt and Rosson, who was heading for home was out at third on the force out to end the threat.

Lauren Zearfoss threw well all game, keeping UTT's batters on their toes and SU's offense continued to provide run support, adding two more runs in the sixth to put the Pirates up 4-0. Southwestern retired the side, closing out the shutout win.

Ambrose led the way going 3-3 in game two with two runs scored and one RBI. Hughes and Galloway both had 2-3 performances in the win.

As a team the Pirates recorded 11 hits and held UTT to just three. Zearfoss earned the shutout win while walking one and striking out six.

Southwestern remains at home to face Concordia on Saturday in a double header beginning at 1:00 pm.
