GREENCASTLE, INDIANA – The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team splits a pair of matches tonight (Friday, September16, 2011) on the first day of the DePauw (Ind.) University Tiger Invitational.   The Yellow Jackets were defeated by the host DePauw Tigers 3-2 in the first match and defeated Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) University in their second match by a score of  3-0.

With the split, the Yellow Jackets snapped a three game losing skid and improved to 9-3 overall.

In the match with  DePauw, B-W fell in five sets by scores of 25-18, 14-25, 25-16, 17-25, and 15-7. The Yellow Jackets were led offensively by freshman outside hitter Kayse Schmucker (Kent/ Roosevelt) with 12 kills  and was second on the team in digs with 15.  Junior outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor/Lake Catholic) added 10 kills.  Junior setter Jessica Stitts (Eastlake/North) tallied 36 set assists, 11 digs and two block assists.  Junior defensive specialist Natalie Emmons (Ashland) led the defense with 20 digs.

In the match with Birmingham-Southern, B-W swept the Panthers in straight sets 25-10, 25-17, and 25-20. The offense was led by Stitts with 32 set assists and Sawicki with 13 kills.  Schmucker and Stitts each added 11 and eight digs respectively.  Defensively, Emmons recorded 18 digs.

The Yellow Jackets will face Millikin (Ill.) University and Rose-Hulan (Ind.) College on Saturday, September 17 on the second and final day of the Tiger Invitational at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.   B-W will return to the friendly confines of the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center on Wednesday, September 21 when it will open Ohio Athletic Conference play and host the Crusaders of Capital University at 7:00 p.m.
