Celts Remove Rosemont From NCAA Tournament Prior to Ending Season

Game 1: UST 12 RSC 0

Facing elimination, Softball responded against Rosemont College with a massive 12-0 victory at the NCAA Opening Regional in Belton, Texas. Stellar pitching from freshman Allison Hughes highlighted the game as she no-hit the Ravens in five innings of action.

It didn't take long for St. Thomas to get on the scoreboard as Mallarie Munson hit a sac fly to score Rebecca Archibald in the first inning. From there, Chloe Bennett got involved in the third with an RBI before Grace Torres came in as a pinch hitter and launched a 2 RBI single to make the score 4-0. At that point, the Celts seemingly took control of the game as nine different batters recorded at least one hit.

Senior Kayleigh Deakle was instrumental to the Celts' run rule of the Ravens as she hit a double to score Adelyn Beccera to make the score 8-0. She then stole home later in the game to make it 10-0 to go along with a perfect 3-3 at the plate.

In the circle, Allison Hughes did nothing but showcase her skills pitching a no-hitter. The freshman picked up her 14th win of the season going five innings and issuing just two walks. She also notched five strikeouts in the win.

Game 2: UST 0 UMHB 8

After securing the victory against Rosemont, the Celts advanced to their next round against Mary Hardin Baylor. With no runs in the first inning, the game looked to be close. However, in the second, the Crusaders scored their first run of the game. From there, the Celts held the Crusaders scoreless for just one inning after, as they scored seven in the next three innings. Down to their final three outs, the Celts looked for a spark as Grace Coffelt hit a ball up the middle, however, were unable to capitalize, thus being eliminated from the tournament.

Thank you for supporting UST softball this season. In just their third year of existence and first year in NCAA Division III, the Celts made continuing strides, taking down TLU for their first SCAC title and advancing all the way to the national tournament. Thank you to our four seniors, Kayleigh Deakle, Grace Coffelt, Hailey Jackson, and Bailey Tisdale for their efforts to build Celt softball.
